If you’ve spent any time browsing the Zong Glass® lineup, you’ve seen the fuming options on almost every piece. Gold fumed. Silver fumed. Sometimes both. The colour results look stunning — but what is fuming, exactly? Why does it cost extra? And does it make any difference to how your piece performs, or is it purely cosmetic?
Here’s everything you need to know about glass fuming, what separates gold from silver, and how to decide which one belongs on your next piece.
What Is Glass Fuming?
Fuming is a glassblowing technique in which a precious metal — gold or silver — is vaporized inside the glass tube during the blowing process. The metal vapour deposits as an ultrafine layer on the inner surface of the glass walls, permanently fused into the piece.
The result is a colour effect that’s unlike anything applied to the outside of glass. Because the metal is deposited inside the tube, it’s completely protected from scratching, fading, or wearing off. More importantly, the fuming is reactive — it changes colour over time as resin builds up, creating a visual shift that’s unique to each piece and each owner’s smoking habits.
This isn’t a surface coating. It isn’t paint. It isn’t a dye. It’s actual precious metal — 24ct gold or .999 silver — permanently embedded in the glass during the production process. The price premium for fuming reflects the cost of the metal itself, the additional skill required during the blow, and the fact that it’s a genuinely irreversible, permanent addition to your piece.
At Zong Glass®, fuming is available across the entire lineup — from the Full Color 1 Kink Zong® to the Monster Zong® 75mm, the Zubbler 50mm, and the full Z-Roller steamroller range.
How Silver Fuming Changes Your Piece
Silver fuming starts as a subtle, almost clear iridescence — a faint shimmer that catches the light without dramatically changing the apparent colour of the glass. Under different lighting conditions, a silver-fumed piece will shift between yellow-gold tones, blue, and green.
Here’s where it gets interesting: as resin builds up inside the piece from regular use, the silver fuming reacts. The piece slowly shifts colour — typically moving toward richer golds, amber tones, and warm yellows as sessions accumulate. A brand-new silver-fumed Zong® looks quite different from the same piece after a month of regular use, and different again after six months.
This colour evolution is entirely unique to your smoking pattern. Two identical silver-fumed pieces owned by two different people for the same amount of time will look different — because the colour is driven by your sessions, your use frequency, and the specific way residue builds in your piece. It’s a living finish in a way no painted or dyed piece can replicate.
Silver fuming is often described as: subtle at first, warmer over time, with a shifting iridescent quality in the light.

How Gold Fuming Changes Your Piece
Gold fuming — 24ct gold at Zong Glass® — produces a more immediately dramatic effect than silver. A freshly blown gold-fumed piece has a warm, rich amber-gold tone that’s visible right away. Under light, it shifts between deep golds, pinks, and purples.
Like silver fuming, gold reacts to resin buildup over time — but the colour evolution is different. Gold-fumed pieces tend to shift toward deeper purples, magentas, and blue tones as use accumulates, rather than the amber warmth of silver. The contrast between a fresh gold-fumed piece and a well-used one is particularly striking.
Gold fuming is also slightly more stable than silver in terms of the initial visual impact — the effect is present and visible from the first use rather than developing gradually. For smokers who want a piece that looks exceptional immediately as well as evolving over time, gold fuming delivers on both counts.
The Full Gold 2 Kink Zong® and Full Gold 6 Kink Zong® are the flagship gold-fumed pieces in the Zong® lineup — entire pieces coated in 24ct gold fuming, not just an accent option. These are among the most visually striking pieces Zong Glass® produces, and the colour shift as they’re used over time is genuinely spectacular.
Gold fuming is often described as: rich amber and gold tones immediately, shifting toward deep purples and pinks with use. More dramatically visible than silver from day one.

Does Fuming Affect Performance?
No — and this is worth being direct about.
Fuming is a visual feature. The precious metal layer deposited inside the tube is microscopically thin and has no meaningful effect on airflow, smoke path, filtration, or hit quality. A fumed Zong® and an unclean-fumed Zong® of identical specification will perform identically.
What fuming does affect is the ownership experience. A fumed piece is a piece that visually records your use — that changes in response to your sessions and becomes increasingly personal over time. For many smokers, this is a significant part of why they choose fumed glass. It’s not just a piece you buy; it’s a piece that becomes yours in a way that’s genuinely visible.
Does Cleaning Affect the Fuming?
This is a common concern, and the answer is reassuring: no, cleaning does not damage or remove glass fuming.
Because the metal is deposited inside the tube during the blow and fused to the glass surface, it’s permanent. Isopropyl alcohol, Grunge Off Super Soaker, and warm water rinses — the standard Zong® cleaning routine — do not affect the fuming layer.
What cleaning does do is temporarily shift the colour back toward a fresher appearance by removing resin buildup. A thoroughly cleaned fumed piece will look closer to its original state than a heavily used uncleaned one. As you smoke it again, the colour evolution resumes. This is part of the appeal — the piece shifts between states depending on where you are in your cleaning cycle.

Which Should You Choose?
Choose silver fuming if: You want a piece that starts subtle and develops its character gradually. Silver-fumed pieces reward long-term ownership — the colour shifts are cumulative and tie directly to your use history. If you want a piece that looks noticeably different at six months than it did on day one, silver is the more striking long-term choice.
Choose gold fuming if: You want a piece that looks spectacular immediately and evolves into something even more visually rich over time. The Full Gold pieces from Zong® are designed for smokers who want maximum visual impact from the first session, plus a colour journey that heads toward purples and magentas with use.
Choose both if: Several pieces in the Zong® lineup offer a combination of gold and silver fuming — layering the two metals creates a more complex colour shift that incorporates elements of both palettes. Ask about combination fuming options when customising your piece.
Choose neither if: You want the cleanest, most straightforward look — clear glass showcases the borosilicate clarity and the colour work without any additional metallic toning. Clear is a legitimate aesthetic choice, not a lesser one.
