A smooth bong hit isn’t luck — it’s the result of a handful of specific, controllable variables working together. Every coughing fit is feedback. And almost every harsh hit has a fixable cause.
Here’s what actually determines how smooth your hit is — and exactly what to change to make each session noticeably better.
1. Start With Cold Water
This is the single easiest change you can make and one of the most immediately impactful.
Water temperature directly determines how much the water cools your smoke as it passes through. Cold water cools smoke more aggressively than room temperature water — the greater the temperature differential between the hot smoke and the water, the more heat transfers.
The difference between room-temperature water and cold water isn’t subtle. A full-size piece like the Fat Series 50mm Zong® or 9mm Thick Zong® — with its larger water volume — will deliver noticeably cooler, smoother hits with cold water than with tap water at ambient temperature.
Use water straight from the fridge, or drop a few ice cubes in and let them melt for a minute before your session. Don’t use iced water so cold it creates condensation problems — just cold enough that you can feel the temperature difference on your hand.
2. Get Your Water Level Right
The right water level is one of the most overlooked variables in bong setup — and getting it wrong in either direction makes hits noticeably harsher.
Too little water: The downstem isn’t fully submerged. Smoke bypasses the water entirely or only partially passes through it. You lose most of the filtration and cooling benefit — the reason you’re using a water pipe instead of a dry pipe.
Too much water: Water travels up the neck on aggressive pulls. On straight tubes and beakers this causes annoying splashback. On a Zong®, the kinked neck provides inherent splash protection — but significantly overfilling still reduces the effective smoke path and can water-log your hits.
The right level: Downstem fully submerged by 1–2cm above the opening. Test by drawing without lighting — you should feel easy airflow and hear clean, consistent bubbling.
For the Zubbler range — Nano 19mm, Micro 25mm, 45mm, 50mm — the inline percolator needs to be fully submerged to produce its diffusion effect. The water level here is more critical than in a standard piece because the perc’s entire function depends on it being underwater.
3. Don’t Pull Too Hard
This is counterintuitive for newer smokers, but pulling too hard on your bong makes hits harsher, not bigger.
An aggressive pull rushes air through the water faster, which means less contact time between the smoke and the water. You’re trading filtration efficiency for speed — and the result is a hotter, less-filtered hit that’s harder on your lungs.
A slow, steady draw gives the smoke more time in contact with the water. The bubbles form more slowly and more completely. More surface area contact, more cooling, more filtration. The hit builds gradually in the chamber and clears cleanly.
Practice pulling at around half the speed you think you need. You’ll feel the difference immediately — the smoke that reaches you is noticeably cooler and the hit is more comfortable to hold.
4. Add a Percolator — or Upgrade to a Zubbler
A percolator breaks smoke into hundreds of tiny bubbles rather than a few large ones. More bubbles means exponentially more surface area in contact with the water, which means dramatically more cooling and filtration per pull.
If you’re currently running a standard waterpipe without a percolator and the hits still feel harsher than you want, a percolator is the most significant performance upgrade available.
The Zong Glass® Zubbler range has an inline percolator built directly into every piece — not an add-on accessory, but part of the original design. The horizontal inline perc distributes smoke evenly across the full length of the water chamber, producing particularly smooth, low-drag hits. Combined with the Z-shaped neck’s extended smoke path cooling, the Zubbler delivers some of the smoothest hits in the Zong® lineup.
The Monster Zong® 75mm with built-in perc takes this to its logical extreme — a 75mm diameter chamber, five kinks, and a percolator. Three cooling systems working simultaneously.
Alternatively, a Z-Catcher ash catcher adds pre-filtration upstream of the main chamber on any existing Zong® piece — catching debris before it enters the water and producing slightly smoother, cleaner hits without upgrading the main piece.
5. Pack Your Bowl Correctly
An overpacked bowl restricts airflow through the material — you’re fighting resistance the entire hit rather than pulling smoothly. This forces harder pulls (see tip 3) and produces denser, hotter smoke than a properly packed bowl.
Pack loosely enough that you can draw air through the unlit bowl with your mouth and feel easy, consistent flow. A medium-coarse grind, packed in light layers rather than compressed in one motion, produces the best airflow and burn consistency.
The Zong Glass® bowls range includes options with bowl geometries designed for proper airflow — the opening and chamber shape matters more than most smokers realise. A quality replacement bowl is one of the most affordable upgrades for noticeable improvement.
6. Keep Your Piece Clean
This one is non-negotiable. A dirty piece hits harshly — every time, for reasons that compound with each uncleaned session.
Residue coating the inside of the chamber and neck restricts airflow. Resin buildup in the downstem reduces filtration efficiency. Old bong water (even a few sessions old) carries dissolved residue that makes every subsequent hit taste and feel rougher. Residue in the Z-neck kinks of a Zong® piece specifically reduces the smoke path’s cooling effectiveness.
A clean piece hits dramatically smoother than a dirty one of identical specification. It’s not a marginal difference.
The simplest routine: change the water after every session, quick warm rinse daily, full clean weekly with Grunge Off Super Soaker. Pour Grunge Off into the piece, let it soak 20–30 minutes, rinse completely. Clean the bowl and downstem in a zip-lock bag simultaneously.
Adding a Z-Catcher ash catcher to your setup keeps the main chamber and neck cleaner between deep cleans — catching debris before it enters the water and accumulates on the glass.
7. Upgrade Your Glass
If you’re doing everything above correctly and hits are still harsher than you want, the piece itself may be the limiting factor.
Thin-walled glass (3mm or cheap import borosilicate) has lower structural integrity and often thinner joint construction that creates micro-leaks affecting airflow. Poor annealing creates internal stress that affects thermal performance over time. Inconsistent glass composition affects how effectively the piece handles temperature cycling.
Premium Schott borosilicate glass — used in every Zong Glass® piece — handles thermal stress better, produces cleaner hits, and maintains performance over years of use in a way that cheaper glass doesn’t.
For smokers who want the smoothest possible hit from the glass itself, the 9mm Thick Zong® delivers premium Schott glass at nearly double standard wall thickness. The Full Gold 6 Kink Zong® adds maximum smoke path cooling through six kinked bends. And the Full Color 1 Kink Zong® is the most accessible entry point to proper Schott glass performance — an immediate upgrade over any cheap import equivalent.
